I want you to take the following quiz (I do not want to know your score, but I do want you to take the quiz), and then add to this discussion board your thoughts about the quiz and what you learned about US history. www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/racism-quiz_us_56d0b7ece4b03260bf76cff6?AFTER you've taken the quiz, please look over this long, detailed article and see if it confirms or challenges your knowledge of race, racism, ethnicity and cultural bias in the United States. Your reactions to the quiz and the article (be sure to address both) are the discussion that follows...

After taking the quiz and reading the article we were presented it made me open my eyes and made me think why this still happening. I noticed that most of the questions in the quiz were centered on the south. I have never been to the south but I figured by now things should be good down there. After reading those answers to the quiz I saw that most of those dates where racist acts or crimes were committed in the past twenty-five years. This is just shocking to me. In the article it talks about the likelihood of someone getting pulled over of color compared to a white person. In almost every case the white person was the one more likely to be the one doing something illegal compared to a person of color.

I was slightly surprised, after completing the quiz, at how recent many of the answers to the questions were. I understood that the south is prejudiced, due to firsthand experience. A few summers ago my family and I drove to Florida and stopped in many southern states along the way. One of the states we stopped in was Alabama. We stayed one night in Mobile, Alabama to rest after a long day of driving. As soon as we entered a hotel, we noticed that the bell hop was being mistreated by costumers due to the color of his skin. He was an African American man and was helping a white family with their luggage. The family would not look him in the eye and barely acknowledged his presence. They muttered racial slurs under their breath and refused to tip him. My family was extremely upset by this, so when he helped us with our luggage, we were extra kind to him. He was in awe of our kindness and asked if we were from there. This experience made me realize that racism is alive and well in this country even today. It was one of the most upsetting experiences I have had to witness, and made me begin to think about what it would be like to be African American in the south. It was baffling for me to see how someone could treat another human being so poorly, while others did not even bat an eye. In regards to police brutality and racial profiling, I was able to take a women's studies course in the past where we spent time discussing this. I was not aware of the severity of these inequalities prior to taking that course. One of the issues we discussed in that course was how many white people assume that African Americans commit more crimes than whites, despite the crime statistics not reflecting that opinion. I recently had an argument with some of my family members, who too shared that opinion. I even gave them statistics and they insisted that I was incorrect. It is weird and frustrating how stereotypes become so engrained in people that it causes them to close their mind from actual statistics.

After reading the article, and taking the quiz, it made me both surprised and angry at the severity of racism still prevalent in the United States today in 21st century. The recent events (past 20-25 years or so) were particularly surprisingly to me, as I felt ignorant of the tragedies due to racism around me. Although there is racism here in the Central Valley, I do feel it is not in the same capacity as states in the South, that could be wrong. Before taking Anthropology 120, I was not all convinced that white privilege was as widespread as I now realize it to be. The article was enlightening about racial profiling and police brutality, and the fact that because people are simply white they are less likely to be pulled over and the like. It is truly sad the injustices that are made every day because of skin color.

After taking the quiz and reading the article, i was surprised of the results and realize what was still happening today. Today there is racism just like how there was racism in the past. We have not done much to change or get rid of racism towards races other than our own. what people tend to do today is just turn the other way or act like it is not even happening. the ways of racism have changed so it is more "acceptable" in people's eyes, but in reality it is still racism. Even from the people we are supposed to trust like the police, they are showing racism and prejudices towards other races and we see it happening more and more on the news. African Americans are the ones who are being targeted here, and when they try to fight the racism away they end up getting punished for fighting for their rights.

Prior to reading the article and taking the quiz, i found it to be really surprising on the amount of racism that is still happening today. I knew that there were still many incidents of racism still taking place today, but i didnt know of how much it was happening and so often in the United States. Now more than ever people with authority are abusing their power and showing signs of racism when conducting traffic stops or making an arrest. We have even seen racism from our soon to be President of the United States, Donald Trump.

After taking the quiz, i got just about everything turned around backwards. I cant believe that in some areas of the US there are still acts and communities that are this racist towards people of color. Then again there are also gray areas in the country especially in the south where the news doesnt like to cover what is going on down there because of the level of segregation and racism that is going on. One thing I can really relate to because I feel like it is here in fresno as well is when they talk about how much more often a person of color will get pulled over versus a white person, and almost every time the person of color would get pulled over when the white guy is doing something illegal.

After taking the quiz, I realized that a lot of the racial problems mentioned in all of our history books still exist. I believe that a lot of people argue that racism and segregation is starting to come back when it reality it has not left. Unfortunately racism is part of our nations history and the fact that all of the issues outlined in the quiz are barely being changed in this century should serve as a wake up call that it is time for more changes to occur.
