Here's a recent article (recent because it references the current election) about PWT -- Poor White Trash -- and their roles in American History/Culture. We will be reading an entire book on the subject, later in the semester, but I wanted to make this available for your reference, either now or later. The Original Underclass: Poor White Americans’ Current Crisis Shouldn’t Have Caught the Rest of the Country as Off Guard As it HasHere's another interesting article What's Going on With America's White People? And another Research Says...And, one more An Insiders View:And, finally, this one, What So Many People Do Not Get About the US Working Classes. I have some issues with some of the author's conclusions, but I think the entirety of the article needs to be considered. Any comments, observations, or general thoughts about this subject posted throughout this thread will be helpful for your classmates.

In this article the authors are having a conversation about the role of poor white people in this year’s election. They talk about how the issues of poor white people have not been brought up until Donald Trump started running for president. They talk about how when you look at Trump supporters at his rally you see white middle to lower class men in there. But they say that those people are not a good representation of his actual supports. Trump has become a voice for those poor white people just like Obama was when he ran for the presidency in 2008. That’s why these authors say that not until now have these problems with poor white be brought up.
