Hi everyone! My name is Viridiana Yasmin Huerta, I am 23 years old and I was born and raised here in Fresno. I consider myself Mexican American. This is my last year at Fresno State and I am majoring in Anthropology. I transferred from Fresno City College majoring in Civil Engineering but it was not my passion therefore I changed my major to Anthropology. I would like to travel around the world and gain insights from the different cultures around the world. I plan on joining the Peace Corps after graduation and afterwards going to a graduate school.

Hello, my name is Matthew Acosta, I am a senior here at CSU Fresno. I am originally from Kingsburg, a small farming town about 30 minutes south of Fresno. My major is Agricultural Business, I am hoping to also get a Pest Control Advisor license and get other certifications along the way. Ive always been around farming my entire life, and hope to work either for a big company managing a particular crop, or to start up my own farming practice with a few acres and working it myself. I have about another year ahead of me, but there is a lot of expectations I intend to meet for both myself and my family. I am the only son of a Hispanic family out of 3 sisters, 1 older and 2 younger. Of course you can imagine how that goes with everything the brother has to take care of. I am currently working for an agricultural science lab here in fresno, however my work takes me everywhere in California and at times out of state. The world of business has many languages and cultures and I will need to be constantly learning the do's and dont's of particular cultures. Its very interesting to expand my thinking and see a situation from an entirely new view point.

My is Valerie, I am 19 years old. This is my 3rd year attending Fresno state and I am a Psychology major. After receiving my bachelor's degree I plan on continuing myou education and getting my masters so I can get into a career with more opportunities to help people. My experience with ethnic relations has to do with me being half mexican but being preceived as being only white. I have noticed how I am stared at while walking around with my family because I am so different than them.

I am also in a fraternity that is quite diverse with different nationalities. You mean that members of your fraternity are citizens of other countries? OR, do you mean that they have different historical national/ethnic heritages. We get VERY specific in the use of terms in this class. It is important to know the differences between race, ethnicity, nationality, national/ethnic origins, linguistic groups, geographic groups, etc. Not one of these is interchangeable with any of the others -- each is unique and has a very specific meaning and I expect all of you to work on getting it right by the end of the semester.

My name is Caitlin Fike and I am an Animal Science major. This is my first semester at Fresno State, I transferred from College of the Sequoias. My goal at Fresno State is to obtain my Bachelor of Science degree while also participating in leadership oriented activities and competitive teams. I want to network as much as possible while I am here. I plan to pursue a Master's degree, and possibly a Doctoral degree, after graduation from Fresno State.
Since both of my parents work in agriculture related industries, the races in my experience seem to enjoy a significant amount of mutual respect and camaraderie. Most of my experience is with rural Hispanic culture, both legal and illegal. I can personally say that as a whole, they are a friendly, kind and generous people. They strongly adhere to traditional foods, social activities and have a strong extended family structure.

Alright Round 2 Hello there. My name is Jenna Seabury. I've been at Fresno state for what seems like an eternity and was studying international business. However just recently I decided to double major in Anthropology, archeology specifically. I took anth 145 with Dr. Roper, and it changed my life. As an avid hiker and backpacker, archeological surveying couldn't be a more perfect job for me. For now my goals are to start working with the Parks service doing some kind of cultural resource management with them, while spending as much time at high elevation, and in the dirt, as possible.

Hello, my name is Hans. I am 21 years old and am a plant science major. I just transferred to Fresno State from Fresno City College with a main goal to learn more about the field I am trying to get in to, along with high grades of course. I enjoy anything outside, and prefer soccer over any sport. I have grown up in Fresno and see many cultures around, although I took this class to help me learn more about where and why these cultural practices differ from my own.

My name is Olivia Maglieri and I am a junior at Fresno State. I currently am majoring in Mass Communication and Journalism with an option in advertising. I am not sure what I would like to do after I graduate, but I am hoping to be employed and work with television advertising. My hobbies include traveling, camping, and acting. I have not had many experiences with race or ethnicity. I am half Italian and half German, Irish, English, Scottish, and Cherokee. My father's side of the family actually emigrated from Italy into America when my grandmother was pregnant with my father. They still keep the Italian culture alive by cooking authentic Italian food and even growing their ingredients in their garden. They also still speak Italian to each other but my father refused to teach my siblings and I how to speak it.

Hi, my name is Jazmyn Lemus Martinez. I am a transfer student from Fresno Pacific University where I was majoring in Biology with emphasis in Pre-Med. My goal is to become an ER doctor. As of right now, I do currently work in a hospital. I am 22 years old and I was not born here in California. I am a Hoosier, born in Elkhart, Indiana. I am excited to start this new semester and continue my journey on the road to medical school. The large school scares me hence why I started out at Fresno Pacific. I hope all that fear will end after tomorrow.

Hello everyone! My name is Terea Ford. I'm a transfer student from Sacramento State University (I have also attended courses at Fresno City College). I'm 21 years old and will be 22 this Halloween. This will be my first semester at Fresno State. My major is Public Health Administration. I have always had a passion for school yet "student" isn't my most important title. My most important position in my life is that of "Momma". I have a two year old daughter who is my everything. She is the light of my world and I strive to provide for her a much better life than my own. My ultimate career goal is to graduate from Fresno State, move down to Southern California, Los Angeles county area to be exact, to work in the Public Health field. Since Public Health is so broad I want to dabble in different areas within my career lifetime. I chose Public Health because I've always wanted a job working with and helping people. Some of my hobbies include reading, writing, road trips, ArtHops, and thrifting (my ultimate favorite, nothing better than cute clothes for a cheap price!) I look forward to our times shared together in Anth-120. Have a great semester!

My name is Haimanti Chowdhury, I am 21 years old and an English Major. This is my final semester, so I'm almost done. My main goal at the university right now is just to finish up my bachelor's degree. Once I graduate, I eventually want to become a teacher. I have always wanted to teach because, I feel that the best way to better society is by helping those that will have the most impact on it in the future, the children. As someone who comes from a Indian background, and having lived in the United States for most of my life, seventeen years, race and ethnicity has always been something that I was interested in. I am excited about this new semester and look forward to learning more about race, ethnicity and culture.

I hope to finish my bachelors degree within the next three semesters and go on to find a rewarding career (that i do not have picked out yet, but who does anyway?). I have not really had any weird experiences with race first hand that i can think of but i know there are serious problems going on in the world right now. I hope to learn more about these problems and how we can attempt to solve them so we do not repeat our past.

Hello! My name is Alix Stephanie Chacon, however, I prefer to be called Stephanie! I am a transfer Junior coming from Fresno City College in hopes of graduating with a deputy badge at heart and a bachelors degree in Criminology (specifically FBS) at hand. If time and life allows me I also hoping to minor in Communications and Psychology. Born and raised in Fresno, I am 21 years of age and have big goals of accomplishing so much. I come from a Mexican-American household, being that my brother and I are the new "American" generation trying to breakout of the old traditional ways. Anyways, these sentences do not define me; I am an open book and I am always willing to talk about anything with anyone!

Good evening everyone! My name is Amber and I'm a Human Resources major. I'm twenty two years of age and I hope to become a human resource manager in the future. My goals are to end this semester with all A's and to get back into my workout routine! I currently work at a sports store and we meet many tourists who are visiting California from foreign countries and picking up supplies. I try my best to be as accommodating as possible towards them and their customs although I've never left the country myself.

Hello everyone. My name is Adara Wall and I am a first semester transfer student at Fresno State. I am a History major looking to get my Bachelor's and Single Subject Teaching Credential for High School. If possible, I want to squeeze in an Anthropology minor as it was my major before History. I eventually want to get a Master's degree in something in the social sciences, I haven't decided what yet. I currently work a part time job and as an ETC Leader at Fresno City College while going to State full time. I love Anthropology, History, mythology, comic books, and all that nerdy junk.

Hi everyone! My name is Ashwin and this is my second semester at Fresno State after transferring from Fresno City college. I am a business major with an emphasis in Human Resources. I am an Asian American who was born in Hayward and then moved here to the valley when I was one. My mom was born and raised in England and my dad was born in Malaysia, but raised all over the world. I've been called a "coconut" and "white washed" so many times because of my non-traditional way of growing up. Though non traditional I am still proud of my Indian heritage.

Hello everyone! My name is Shenee and this is my third semester at Fresno State after transferring from Fresno City. I was born in the central valley and moved away to San Francisco for a few years after high school. That got really expensive so eventually I moved back to Fresno to go back to school. I still miss living in the bay area and hope to move back someday. I love animals, traveling, and learning about different cultures and practices that are different than my own. I think learning about other cultures is a great way to learn more about your own culture and the preconceived ideas that you may not even have known you had. What is considered normal is relative- there's no such thing really- which I find quite liberating. Looking forward to this class. Hope everyone's first week of classes went well!

My name is Jillian Wulf, I am a transfer student from CSUB, but originally I am from Temecula, California. I transferred in order to play water polo for Fresno State, as the program was cut at CSUB. I should be in my last year of college, but after this transfer I have to play it by ear. I am majoring in Biology and would like to end up doing research and conservation work with either the US Forest Service or California Fish and Wildlife. Playing a sport like water polo has allowed me to play with people from all over the world from South Africa to Brazil. It has introduced me to many different ethnicities and cultures.

I'm Christina. I'm in English major, but that could change depending on this class. I took an Anthropology course a few years back in Community College and I absolutely loved it. So, I decided to take two anthropology courses this semester to get my feet wet in the study and to try to rekindle the old flame of passion. I love to travel. I love Ska, and my favorite book is Lolita by Nabokov.

Hello Everyone! My name is Dion Foster, I am a transfer student form Clovis Community College and I am currently studying Communications at Fresno State. My goal for this University is to graduate with my Master's degree,(and perhaps pursue a doctorates degree) so that I may become a college professor in Communication. I identify myself as part African American descent, (my father side), and part Hispanic descent, (my mother side); but truly I know that my genetic genes carry much more than just these two ethic groups. I hope to get a better insight into the different ethic backgrounds to further understand the different cultures around me.
Best wishes, Dion Foster
