Hello! My name is Nolan Trupp. I'm transferring in from West Hills in Lemoore and I'm very excited to be taking a real Anthropology class. I'm a computer science major, but the arts and humanities have always interested me greatly and I'm looking forward to taking a class focused on Anthropology. I'm also very interested in linguistics and non-English languages, and hope to be fluent in Spanish by the time I graduate. Hopefully I can find a job that makes use of my eclectic interests. I have family from Nicaragua, Mexico, Germany, and Russia, so I come from a very mixed bag of backgrounds. Hopefully with some help from this class I can learn a bit more about the cultures of my ancestors.

Hello, My name is Melina and I am currently a psychology major and possibly minoring in music (have not decided yet). I am a Jr and I hope to attain a BA and start my career in Social Work. I tell others I am Latina or Hispanic but the quick answer given is usually Mexican, just because that is the answer most people look for. I am also first generation born here (Fresno). Spanish is my first language but as I grew older my Spanish is not as strong as it used to be. I hope this class will further teach me about myself and the people around me.

Hello, my name is Richard Alonzo, I am a transfer student from Clovis Community College. I am a criminology student majoring in law enforcement. At Fresno State, I would like to get my degree and then become a police officer. I am Mexican-American, and lived in Fresno all my life. I have not had much experience with it comes to dealing with race and other ethnicity other than meeting people through-out my classes. I would like to become more active in my community. I signed up for classes late and was told that I need a "w" class and to take this one, after sitting through several classes, I can say, I am extremely interested in this class and I am ready to learn.

Hello, my name is Ricky Avila and I am 23 years old. I am a senior here at FSU and look to complete my BA in Music Performance (emphasis on Violin) this coming December. Few additional things is I am a transfer student from College of the Sequoias community college located in my hometown Visalia, CA. I still reside there and commute to Fresno for school and other school related activities I am required to attend. On my down time I enjoy playing, performing, and recording music (shocker I know, coming from a music major) with either friends, colleagues, or by myself in my room.

Hi my name is Emilee Cantu and I am majoring in Philosophy. My goal is to become a college professor. I want to teach Philosophy, Theology, Divinity, and Biblical Geography. I am inspired by all religions and it is fascinating to learn about different cultures. I have taken many anthropology classes and I find it interesting to see how people view the world. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and I am genuinely intrigued by getting to know people. I come from a Hispanic background and I have been told my entire life, “you are full Mexican.” I want to take a DNA test, so I can discover my true ethnicity and where I come from.

Hello my name is David Alvarez, I am a member of the federally recognize Pascua Yaqui Tribe stationed in Arizona. My heritage and culture is a lifestyle I choose to follow and I practice traditional ceremonies my ancestors once used. Initially, my primary college of choice was Arizona State, however, under critical circumstances, I had to stay in Fresno. Which is still a good place to be, I am grateful to be able to study and gain knowledge. I am a sociology major and I plan on persuing a doctorates in the field of social psychology. I have both good and bad experiences with race and ethnicity, more often than none it's usually bad. Part of my cultural practice is to grow my hair out, people perceive this choice as out of norms with our society. Being confused for a female or laughed at for having long hair happens often when I am out in the town. This situation has effected 3 generations that I am connected to, first my father, me and now my son. Along with this type of behavior, there is always a question about me being a "casino indian," which is offensive in presuming ones background. There has been many more incidents that i can continue with and i am sure most would think it's absurd to act such a way to another human being, but it is part of the society we live in today and this pays respects to media and other sources that portray Native people in such ways. On the other hand, I have met people from around the world who are on the other side of the spectrum of judging and prejudice. Whether my interactions with people are positive or negative, I try and educate or bring awareness to the matter even if it doesn't concern my own race. It is crucial that we stand up for not only our own but for others going through the same thing. In the end, we all share the same anatomy and life givers, which are earth, fire, water, and air.

Hello! My name is Arthur Pena Flatray though my family and closest friends call me by my middle name, Aidan. I am 22 years old and I was born in San Jose, CA but have lived in Clovis since I was 8 years old. I transferred from Clovis Community College last year and originally started with a major in environmental science. However before arriving at Fresno State I switched to a major in History. My goal here at Fresno State is to earn my four-year degree in History. Afterwards I plan on entering the Masters program, followed by receiving a doctorate. Finally, I hope to one day become a History professor so that one day I will be able to teach future generations. This is my first time taking an anthropology class and I hope that this class will help me view history in a new and interesting way.

Hello everyone. My name is Adara Wall and I am a first semester transfer student at Fresno State. I am a History major looking to get my Bachelor's and Single Subject Teaching Credential for High School. If possible, I want to squeeze in an Anthropology minor as it was my major before History. I eventually want to get a Master's degree in something in the social sciences, I haven't decided what yet. I currently work a part time job and as an ETC Leader at Fresno City College while going to State full time. I love Anthropology, History, mythology, comic books, and all that nerdy junk. Double major -- that's what I did and it opened up lots of additional doors.

Hello, my name is Belinda. I am a Liberal Studies major. My goal is to earn my multi subject credential and teach elementary school. My projected graduation date is Spring 2017. For the sake of simplicity, I say Mexican American because I am of Mexican ancestry, but born and raised in America. My citizenship is American. What feels most comfortable for me is the term Chicana. The Chicano/a experience is to be of Mexican ancestry, but born and raised in the US. This is a different experience because, for most of us, our parents were born in the US so we are removed from the experience of having close ties in Mexico. I hope to learn more about how the concept of race influences our personal experiences and participate in discussions so I can broaden my scope of understanding others which will help me navigate my future classroom.

Hello everyone. My name is Joshua Avila. I am a music education major. I plan to get my BA and then enter into the credential program so I can teach music. I have been married for a little over a year. I am from and have mostly lived in Tulare. I have 2 cats named Mango and Cubby. This class has been interesting so far. I have been involved in my Portuguese culture almost all my life. In a discussion during class, the term white washed was being used in my group and suddenly realized that I had used that word myself to tease my less culturally involved friends. I am curious to see what other racially skewed dialogue or even actions permeate daily life.

Hello guys, I'm Bryan Mora. I'm currently a sophomore at Fresno State and I am a computer science major. I live in Lemoore, California which is a little over 40 minutes away from Fresno State. I have lived here most of my life and have been preparing to go to Fresno State since high school. I'm taking two anthropology classes, both very different but I seem to enjoy this one more. I hope to continue learning about different cultures in this class for the rest of the semester.

Hey there, I'm late to this party (story of my life). My name is Dominic Grijalva, and I am a Graphic Design major and will be graduating this December. I'm also very involved in the theatre community around the Central Valley by performing and directing local productions. I'm of Mexican heritage, but lately I've been wanting to take a DNA test because I believe there's a bit more going on in my DNA. I plan to move to New York City next year to work in the advertising industry for Broadway shows, as well as design projection graphic for live performances.
My personal experience with ethnicity has been positive. If I've ever been met with prejudice because of the color of my skin, I didn't see it. Be that due to getting lucky, or blind naivety, I'm very grateful for not letting these factors limit my ambition nor allowing them to dictate my life's course. I'm interested in learning about real struggle, and how we can all interact with each other more respectfully as one human race.

Hello everyone, my name is Lawrence Barba, I am married, 55 years old and I have three kids. All three are in college and I am going through my college experience with them. My major is Natural Science with a Biology option, my ultimate goal when I graduate is to teach high school Biology. I am continually amazed with every class that we have in Anthro 120. It is just so interesting. I am a Veteran that served in the Army from 1985 to 1989. The majority of the other soldiers that served with me were white, Hispanic and Black. There were very very few Asians (Japanese and Chinese), we were mostly lower and middle class and no one from the upper class....Why?
