Greetings! My name is Panhou Yang and I am a junior at Fresno State. I'm a workaholic and have worked for various employers throughout the Fresno County including the county itself, Fresno Yosemite Airport, CostCo and etc. Throughout my employed years, I was able to compare employers and observe how they handle similar situations in a different settings. Furthermore, these experiences did inspired me to major in HR Management through the Craig School of Business. Till this day, I still use my prior knowledge and experience of entry level jobs to encourage me to graduate and become a better person than I was yesterday. Overall, I am excited to start a new semester by absorbing new insights and understanding of race, ethnicity and culture.

Hello! My name is Jordan Salcido and I am a junior as well as a Criminology major at Fresno State. I am 19 years old and have lived in Fresno all my life up to graduation at Bullard High. I ended up going to Merced College and moving there after high school to play water polo which was a fantastic experience. Playing a sport all of my life has really helped me with being a team player and has made me become more of an outgoing person. I recently moved back to fresno after I received my CSU transfer and plan to get a BS in Criminology with a Law Enforcement emphasis. After graduation I would like to pursue a career with the California Highway Patrol.

My name is Amy Guthrie and I am a new student at Fresno State. I am a pre nursing major, but working on my fall back major of biology. I moved here from Austin,Tx to be closer to my husband's family. I have a German Irish background and my husband is from Mexico. Before moving to Fresno we spent a year in Ensenada, Mexico because I had always wanted to experience life outside of the States. I have an eight year old son, 2 dogs, a cat, an African Grey Parrot, and four laying hens. Needless to say I love a full house. I'm pretty excited about this class as I love cultural studies and have spent the last years of my education taking math and science classes, a semester of anthropology and humanities should be refreshing and interesting! Hoping to get into the medical field after graduation, exactly which path depending a lot on acceptance into the nursing program.

Another one of the things I enjoy doing on my free time is reading, I'm a huge bookworm and romance novels are my favorite. From this class, I am looking forward to learning and understanding more things about new cultures.

Hello there. My name is Jenna Seabury. I've been at Fresno state for what seems like an eternity and was studying international business. However just recently I decided to double major in Anthropology, archeology specifically. I took anth 145 with Dr. Roper, and it changed my life. As an avid hiker and backpacker, archeological surveying couldn't be a more perfect job for me. For now my goals are to start working with the Parks service doing some kind of cultural resource management with them, while spending as much time at high elevation, and in the dirt, as possible.

I consider myself Mexican American as I grew up with my parents Mexican culture but was born and raised in America. One of my goals is to graduate and work with a company that does business globally. Although this class is fulfilling my MI requirement, I chose it over other courses as the subject seemed interesting.

Hello my name is Malena Savell. I am a Psychology major and i plan to go into Biological Psychology with a focus on research, studying the link between child development and criminal tendency. As far as I know, I am of Middle Eastern, Italian, and Caucasian descent. My parents did not raise me with an emphasis on culture in terms of our diet, or religious practices. However, now that I am a mother, I hope to give my son a better understanding of his heritage and the ancestry that lead to his existence. I am very intrigued by the idea that this class will better develop my understanding of the foundation that our societies' concept of race and ethnicity is built upon.

Hello, my name is Victoria. This is my third year at Fresno State. I am an Anthropology major but I did not choose my major right away. When I graduated high school and enrolled in Fresno State I had no idea what I wanted to major in and did not know what career path to pursue. Rather than declaring a major I remained undeclared and focused on completing my G.E. requirements. In the process I took critical thinking anthropology and cultural anthropology. Both fulfilled my G.E. requirements and I really enjoyed the classes because the foundations of the discipline explained the culture and functions of society in a way that made sense. It took me a long time before I choose my major partly because I did not know what kind of jobs I could get with a degree in anthropology. I have found that there are many opportunities for an anthropologist because it is the study of humans which can be applied to almost anything that deals with people. Cultural anthropology tends to be my main area of interest. More specifically I tend to gravitate towards situations that deal with issues of power in the world and within societies. For instance I would be interested in working with people who write policies. I could work for a non-profit organization or practice journalism that would be different from most work that a journalist would produce because it would incorporate a holistic anthropological perspective. I know my goal is to go to grad school but I'm strongly considering joining the peace core first.

Hello, my name is Kenneth Herman. I am currently a senior at CSU Fresno pursuing anthropology as a major and have considered mobilizing my focus towards Design Anthropology. Most of you are learning about the horrid shadow of hate, discrimination, prejudice and racism percolating in the United States, and some of you have experienced it first hand, as I have. Recently, only four days ago, a large pregnant white blonde hair blue eyed person's father called campus police on me saying I was not a student and tried to have me removed from campus, by force. I was literally threatened by campus police up until the time I was able to provide proof as a student. The copper tried to explain to me his methodology and said to me, "If you saw a guy like you talking to your daughter, you would want me to have a talk with you, right?" I was in dismay and stumped by his overwhelming display of ignorance and never responded. Do white people experience racism, prejudice, discrimination? Yes By all definitions, I am white, of German and English decent. However, because I have long hair, while living here in the United States I have experienced discrimination, prejudice, segregation and other forms of hate aimed directly towards me. You see, I am a "HIPPIE" by american standards, and do not fit in here. White men living in the United States that have long hair are called hippies, which is a demeaning, condescending and oppressive. I have been ostracized, pushed aside, discriminated against at every level, and beaten nearly to death here in the US of A (Murica). On the flip side, I think other races, here in the USA and abroad trust me more than they trust a short hair white mail that represents oppression. About me; I am a loving father who believes life is love and love is an action.

Remember, this is a writing class -- watch things like grammar and spelling, as they will cause your grade to go down, even if you consider this just an internet posting. This is still formal university-level writing.

My name is Stephen Grady, i'm 21, and i'm a transfer student from Willow. I'm majoring in Criminology and hope to become a Highway Patrol Officer after college. When i'm not at school, I coach 7th grade football at Alta Sierra Intermediate and play rugby for state. My other passions include: riding motorcycles (dirt & Street), shooting guns & bows, hiking, hunting, camping, snowboarding, working out, and reading. I wanted to take this class because I wanted to learn more about different race and cultures and become more aware and understanding of cultures other than my own. This knowledge will help me become the best officer I can be.

Hello my name is Vanessa Butler, I am a junior here at CSU Fresno. I moved to Fresno during my first year of High School, Orange County is where I am originally from. It was a big change for me but I have gotten so used to it now and I am glad to be able to call Fresno my home. My major is Psychology, I want to work with children as a child psychologist. I have a passion for helping children and can not wait to have a little one myself. I have a lot more schooling ahead of me but I am so ready for it! I consider myself Mexican, but my mom tells me that I am Hispanic, Irish, Native American, and Bohemian. My boyfriend is Muslim from Afghanistan so I am around them a lot and get to learn about their culture, beliefs, and yummy food all the time. I love being around other cultures and learning their beliefs, it is something that has always been very interesting to me.

I consider myself Mexican, but my mom tells me that I am Hispanic, Irish, Native American, and Bohemian. Let's unpack that. You're NOT Mexican unless you are a Mexican citizen. If you have American citizenship, you're Mexican American. If you adhere to Chican@ culture -- which is specific to Mexican Americans (ChicanA@ culture doesn't really exist anywhere else, as it's a creation of Mexican Americans wanting to carve out a unique identity separate from and blending both American and Mexican cultures. You are Hispanic (which is a language group) if you're a member of a family that comes from a Spanish-speaking culture (Philippines, Spain, Latin America -- minus Brazil). Many Mexicans, Chican@s and Mexican Americans contain Native American or indigenous blood, so you're solid there. The Irish descent is not surprising, either, as immigrants from there came throughout the Americas. Bohemia is an interesting choice. I'd love to hear why or how that's included in your background, Since that's a territory in Czech Republic centered on the Capital City of Prague. Prague is a beautiful city, but I fell in love with the villages and small towns of CR, years ago and can't wait to return. Luckily, we're all a mixture of many so-called ethnic backgrounds -- that's ultimately what makes us human.
